What is a designated Institution?
A designated learning institution is a school approved by a provincial or territorial Government to host international students. Once you get accepted into the College or University of your choice, you will need an acceptance letter from that designated learning institution.
Can my kids study in any school?
All primary and secondary school in Canada are designated learning institutions. If your kids are planning to attend a post-secondary school, you must make sure it is on the list of designated learning institution.
Am I allowed to work while I'm studying?
Students who are registered in full time academic, vocational or professional trades programs at designated Universities or Colleges may be eligible to work on or off campus if you meet specific eligibility criteria. In general, students must have the following documents to able to work while studying : a valid study permit with work authorization, , full time enrolment, medical examination is required for certain occupations (eg: jobs at school, childcare, eldercare, food industry etc)
Can I come to Canada with only a study permit?
Your study permit is not a visa. It does not let you enter Canada. Depending from which country you are coming from, you may or may not need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to be able to enter Canada. Once your study permit is approved, the Government will issue a study permit approval letter and if required an entry visa in your passport, authorizing your travel to Canada
What documents are required to apply for a study permit?
You will need an official offer of admission and letter of acceptance from the designated University or College, a valid passport of your country (make sure that the passport is valid for the entire duration of your study in Canada, must provide proof you have enough money for your tuition-living expenses, a passport sized photo of yourself that meets Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, biometrics. There are other supporting documents that are also crucial to complete your study permit such as health exam as well as insurance, police record, and country specific documents.
I have my study permit ready but I can't travel because of a covid-19 ban in my country, what do I do?
Please refer to the college or university webpage, most of the designated institution are letting students with this situation defer the studies to the next semester or may choose to study online. According to Immigration,Refugee and Citizenship Canada courses taken online from your country may count towards your post graduate work permit.
